How to Read a Mopar Build Sheet: Annotated Example

A long factory equipment list can be intimidating because the useful items are mixed with production codes, package identifiers, and descriptions that do not all carry the same importance.

This walkthrough uses an illustrative example, not a real customer VIN. The goal is to show the order in which to review a Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Ram equipment record.

1. Start with vehicle identity

Before interpreting options, make sure the record describes the vehicle you intended to decode.

Check the brand and model, model year, body or cab style, drivetrain, engine family, and any plant or market information shown.

If the identity is clearly wrong, stop and verify the VIN before relying on any options.

2. Review the powertrain

Powertrain items often have the greatest impact on parts, capability, and value.

Look for engine, transmission, transfer case or AWD/4WD system, axle/differential description, and cooling or heavy-duty equipment.

Do not assume a package name alone proves every mechanical component. Read the individual equipment lines too.

3. Find towing and capability equipment

For trucks and SUVs, look for explicit equipment descriptions related to trailer hitch/receiver, trailer-brake controller, tow groups, cooling, alternator/battery upgrades, axle ratio, suspension, skid plates, and off-road hardware.

A build sheet can help confirm the hardware group, but it does not replace the vehicle-specific towing label, owner documentation, or official towing chart.

4. Separate package names from individual features

A package can be a container for several features.

An illustrative record might show a package name plus separate lines for heated seats, a steering-wheel heater, remote start, and all-weather equipment.

When comparing a used listing, verify the important feature lines rather than relying only on the package label.

5. Review exterior configuration

Exterior items may include paint color, two-tone or accent treatment, wheel design/size, tire type, roof configuration, appearance group, lighting, badges, or decals.

These items are easy to change later, so use the build sheet to establish the factory baseline and compare it with photos or a physical inspection.

6. Review interior and comfort

Check seat material, seat configuration, heated/ventilated functions, steering-wheel features, climate control, roof equipment, audio, infotainment, navigation, power outlets, and convenience equipment.

A used vehicle may have aftermarket electronics, so the original record is especially useful here.

7. Check safety and driver assistance

Depending on model year, the record may identify driver-assistance or safety groups.

Confirm important features physically and through the vehicle menus. A factory record can establish original equipment, but sensors or modules may have been replaced or disabled.

8. Understand sales codes

Sales codes are short alphanumeric identifiers attached to factory equipment and ordering configurations.

Use the Sales Code Navigator when you want to research an unfamiliar code, but keep the VIN-specific vehicle context in mind.

A short code description should not be treated as a universal definition across every model year and market.

9. Distinguish factory equipment from current equipment

This is the most important rule.

The build sheet answers: what was the vehicle recorded as having when built?

The physical inspection answers: what does the vehicle have now?

For a used vehicle, you need both.

10. Save the critical items

For shopping or service research, create a short list of the equipment that actually affects your decision: engine, transmission, drivetrain, axle, towing, suspension/brakes, key packages, paint/interior, and high-value technology.

You rarely need to understand every production-oriented line before the data becomes useful.
