6J2 — Paint Order Code. This code identifies a factory paint color, stripe, badge, or exterior appearance treatment. Browse Sales Code codes →

The dealer gave me a different interpretation of 6J2 than the online description “Paint Order Code. This code identifies a factory paint color, stripe, badge, or exterior appearance treatment” This is for a 2021 Dodge Journey. Could both descriptions be valid for different production periods?

Check the production month as well as the model year. Mid-year changes are one reason two vehicles with the same badge can have different hardware or descriptions.

The dealer should be able to pull a VIN-specific equipment or parts record. Ask them to search by VIN rather than entering only the three-character code.

The wording may be abbreviated because these were originally production codes rather than consumer descriptions. “Paint Order Code. This code identifies a factory paint color, stripe, badge, or exterior appearance treatment” is a reasonable plain-English reading, but the exact implementation should be verified for the 2021 model.

That code should be read as a factory configuration identifier, not necessarily a guarantee of a separate dashboard control. Some equipment operates automatically or is bundled with another system.

A clear photo of the build label, VIN report, and the relevant component would help. Do not post the full VIN publicly; the last eight characters are normally enough for a parts-counter discussion.

If you are documenting the vehicle, save both the original wording and the readable explanation. That preserves the factory terminology while making the record understandable later.
